To mark its major milestone – 30 years in business – Foton welcomed the team from the renowned SAT TV programme to Beijing, giving them an exclusive insight into the future of transport. While public attention is often focused primarily on passenger vehicles, this time the spotlight was on the segment where Foton holds a leading position – commercial vehicles that keep the global economy moving.
Impressive Figures: Four Times Faster Than European Giants
Foton's production capacity attracted particular attention, with the SAT team comparing it in the programme with Mercedes-Benz truck production. Mercedes-Benz produces around 150 units of its renowned Actros every day at its largest plant in Wörth. However, the visit to Foton's production facilities revealed an entirely different level of efficiency. An impressive 600 trucks roll off Foton's production lines every day. This figure, showing that Foton produces four times as many vehicles per day as the European giant, clearly positions Chinese vehicles as a major force in the global market.
Testing on the Track: From Miller to Wonder
The SAT team had a unique opportunity to test much of Foton's range at the proving ground. Electric delivery vehicles attracted particular attention, alongside proven internal combustion engine models. The Foton Miller light-duty truck, equipped with a 2.5-litre 130 hp diesel engine, demonstrated impressive agility, while the new Wonder, with its two-litre turbocharged CNG engine, brought a fresh approach to the segment, confirming the growing role of Chinese vehicles in the adoption of alternative fuels.
More Than Work Vehicles: Robust Pickups and Luxury Motorhomes
Although electric commercial vehicles are a major focus for the future, Foton has not forgotten drivers looking for power and adventure. The brand has built a strong reputation among four-wheel enthusiasts thanks to its pickup models. These powerful vehicles draw inspiration from some of the best American pickups – robust, capable and ready for demanding terrain.
However, one of the biggest surprises of the trip was discovering Foton's recreational vehicle range. Few people are aware that Foton also manufactures premium motorhomes, and the Starlight model from its current range impressed those present with its level of finish and comfort. It demonstrates that Chinese electric vehicles and their conventionally powered counterparts are no longer simply "tools for work", but sophisticated products designed for leisure as well.
The visit to Beijing confirmed what market trends have been indicating for some time: Foton is no longer an "emerging player", but a global leader. Whether in heavy-duty trucks, light commercial vehicles or luxury motorhomes, the brand demonstrates that commercial vehicles from China are ready to set new global standards in production efficiency, innovation and design.
